The Angular Broadening of the Galactic Center Pulsar SGR J1745-29: A New Constraint on the Scattering Medium

چکیده
The pulsed radio emission from the Galactic Center (GC) magnetar SGR J1745-29 probes the turbulent, magnetized plasma of the GC hyperstrong scattering screen through both angular and temporal broadening. We present the first measurements of the angular size of SGR J1745-29, obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array and the phased Very Large Array at 8.7 and 15.4 GHz. The source sizes are consistent with the scatter–broadened size of Sagittarius A* at each frequency, demonstrating that SGR J1745-29 is also located behind the same hyperstrong scattering medium. Combining the angular broadening with temporal scattering obtained from pulsar observations provides a complete picture of the scattering properties. If the scattering occurs in a thin screen, then it must be at a distance ∆ ∼ 5 kpc. A best-fit solution for the distance of a thin screen is ∆ = 5.9±0.3 kpc, consistent with being located in the Scutum spiral arm. This is a substantial revision of the previously held model in which the scattering screen is located very close to the GC. As also discussed in Spitler et al. (2013), these results suggest that GC searches can detect millisecond pulsars gravitationally bound to Sgr A* with observations at ∼ 10 GHz and ordinary pulsars at even lower frequencies. Discovery of Three Pulsars from a Galactic Center Pulsar Population
We report the discovery of three pulsars whose large dispersion measures and angular proximity to SgrA* indicate the existence of a Galactic center population of neutron stars. The relatively long periods (0.98 to 1.48 s) most likely reflect strong selection against short-period pulsars from radio-wave scattering at the observation frequency of 2 GHz used in our survey with the Green Bank Teles...
متن کاملA Strongly Magnetized Pulsar within Grasp of the Milky Way’s Supermassive Black Hole
The center of our Galaxy hosts a supermassive black hole, Sagittarius (Sgr) A∗. Young, massive stars within 0.5 pc of Sgr A∗ are evidence of an episode of intense star formation near the black hole a few Myr ago, which might have left behind a young neutron star traveling deep into Sgr A∗’s gravitational potential. On 2013 April 25, a short X-ray burst was observed from the direction of the Gal...

We report the discovery of 3.76-s pulsations from a new burst source near Sgr A* observed by the NuSTAR Observatory. The strong signal from SGR J1745−29 presents a complex pulse profile modulated with pulsed fraction 27 ± 3% in the 3 − 10 keV band. Two observations spaced 9 days apart yield a spin-down rate of Ṗ= (6.5± 1.4)× 10. This implies a magnetic field B = 1.6× 10 G, spin-down power Ė= 5 ...
متن کاملFinding Radio Pulsars in and beyond the Galactic Center
Radio-wave scattering is enhanced dramatically for galactic center sources in a region with radius∼> 15 arc min. Using scattering from Sgr A∗ and other sources, we show that pulse broadening for pulsars in the Galactic center is at least 6.3 ν−4 seconds (ν = radio frequency in GHz) and is most likely 50–200 times larger because the relevant scattering screen appears to be within the Galactic ce...
